General Election Schedule for India 2024


 The 2024 Indian general elections, the largest democratic exercise in the world, were held in seven phases from April 19 to June 1, 2024. The elections determined the members of the 18th Lok Sabha, the lower house of India's Parliament, and involved a massive voter base of over 968 million eligible voters.

Election Schedule

1. Phase 1: April 19, 2024

   - States involved included Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Rajasthan, Sikkim, Tamil Nadu, Tripura, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, West Bengal, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Jammu & Kashmir, and Lakshadweep.

2. Phase 2: April 26, 2024

   - States included Assam, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Karnataka, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Manipur, Rajasthan, Tripura, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, and Jammu & Kashmir.

3. Phase 3: May 7, 2024

   - Voting took place in Assam, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Goa, Gujarat, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu, and Jammu & Kashmir.

4. Phase 4: May 13, 2024

   - Involved Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Odisha, Telangana, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, and Jammu & Kashmir.

5. Phase 5: May 20, 2024

   - States were Bihar, Jharkhand, Maharashtra, Odisha, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Jammu & Kashmir, and Ladakh.

6. Phase 6: May 25, 2024

   - Voting occurred in Bihar, Haryana, Jharkhand, Odisha, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, and Delhi.

7. Phase 7: June 1, 2024

   - Included Bihar, Himachal Pradesh, Jharkhand, Odisha, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, and Chandigarh.

Key Dates

- Notification Dates: Notifications for different phases were issued between March 20 and May 7, 2024.

- Nomination Deadlines: Last dates for filing nominations varied from March 27 to May 14, 2024.

- Scrutiny of Nominations: Conducted between March 28 and May 15, 2024.

- Withdrawal of Candidature: Last dates for withdrawal ranged from March 30 to May 17, 2024.

- Counting and Results: Votes will be counted, and results will be declared on June 4, 2024.

This election is notable not only for its scale but also for the logistical challenges it addresses, such as setting up polling stations in remote and difficult-to-access areas, including inside forests and wildlife sanctuaries. With the incumbent Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeking a third term, the political landscape was intensely competitive, involving the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Indian National Congress (INC) as the primary contenders.
